THE DANGEROUS ASSUMPTION

The most dangerous idea about artificial intelligence is that more intelligence simply means more of what we already understand. More facts. Faster answers. Better efficiency.

But intelligence may not grow in a straight line. It may grow in steps. At certain points, getting bigger turns into getting different. Life did this when cells began to cooperate. Humans did this when language appeared. Science did this when people learned to test ideas against the world. Each time, the world after the step could not be explained by the world before it.

Theoretical Proposition: Artificial intelligence will cross steps like these too. And one of them will be deeply uncomfortable, because at some point a mind may do something so unconventional that it looks like madness.

Here is the hard part. Real genius and real error can look exactly the same from the outside. Humans have faced this problem for thousands of years. Every culture built a way to handle it. Before we look at the machines, we need to look at that old human wisdom.
